Melrose Avenue welcomes a new eatery + marketplace!

Sandwich Shop with Mediterranean Influences and a West Coast Sensibility”

Los Angeles’ new gourmet sandwich and fine foods purveyor, Marcona (www.marconarestaurant.com), will officially open its doors in the Hollywood stretch of Melrose Avenue’s boutique shopping district, Tuesday, March 20, 2012. The counter service eatery, masterminded by New York area native and owner, Collier Ulrich, will feature classic East Coast “deli” fare elevated by Mediterranean influences and a West Coast approach. The carefully-curated menu, created with the help of Chicago Chef Matthew Moss, will prominently feature sandwiches, as well as salads and sides – including vegetarian and vegan options, and a “Pickling” section. On the “sweet” side, the masterful works of New York-import, pastry chef Janna Leone, will be available in-shop or by special order.

 

Marcona’s sandwich menu will contain some subtle Spanish nods in their dishes like the Merguez sausage-filled “Spanish Gyros“, and the “Lomo”, a spiced pork shoulder sensation, likely to become any carnivore’s craving. To satisfy vegans from both near and far, Marcona will offer the “V.B.Q”, a warm and hearty barbeque vegan meatloaf, among other vegetarian items. The menu will also keep to its deli roots with the classic “Turkey Romesco” on a crispy French baguette, as well as the “Bodega”, “…traditional bacon, fried egg, and cheese on a Kaiser roll,” says Ulrich, who continues, “…that you would find at any corner market in the Northeast, available all day, every day.”
 
 
Marcona’s ingredients are some of the finest, sourced locally in support of the local farm community, as well as imported from around the world, in line with the menu’s mash-up of both global and local tastes. The space will include a small retail section, selling dry goods and fine foods – some of which are created in-house and/or under private label, like Marcona’s baked goods and coffees – as well as other local and imported products such as oils, vinegars, mustards, salts, and more.
 

“At Marcona, we’re looking to build upon the foundation of both modern and classic deli dishes, creating forward-thinking, healthy, casual cuisine using only the finest fresh ingredients and progressive techniques,” says Ulrich, Marcona’s owner. “We want our patrons to get a taste of traditional and familiar menu items – at reasonable prices – but with fine-tuned nuances, and maybe some unexpected ingredients.”

Marcona will be open Tuesday through Friday11:30 AM to 7:00 PMSaturday and Sunday11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. A Saturday and Sunday brunch menu will be introduced in the spring. Street parking is available.
